THE vicar of Stannington is preparing to jump from a plane at 12,000 feet.
The Rev Canon Philip West has signed up for a tandem skydive with the aim of raising £3,000 for the Church Mission Society.
He had been wishing he had done a parachute jump when a flyer for the charity’s skydive came through the door. With a medical certificate secured, he will go to an airfield in Northamptonshire, near where he grew up, on October 20.
“I have already worked out I’ll be really excited until the plane wheels leave the ground!” said Philip, aged 64. “But a few people have told me it is a wonderful thing to do. I’m no spring chicken but I heard of a woman of 80 who enjoyed it so much she has done it three more times.
“I hope to arrive back in Stannington in time for a harvest supper, to tell people all about it and hopefully have a video to show.”
The Church Mission Society provides doctors, nurses, agriculturalists for needy places across the world.
