University plans food degree

Sheffield Hallam University has been chosen by the UK food and drink industry to develop the country’s first dedicated food and drink engineering degree.

The Food and Drink Federation announced the decision after a rigorous selection process.

Dr Martin Howarth, Hallam head of engineering and maths, said: “The project builds on our strong track record of providing excellent engineering education.”

Angela Coleshill, federation human resources director, said: “We are delighted to be working with Hallam to design a degree course that matches food and drink manufacturers’ needs.”

The university hopes to enrol the first students on the new course in 2014.
