A North Derbyshire teenager is off to study in the States after winning a prestigious scholarship offering financial support worth more than £100,000.
Eckington School student Georgia Murray has been accepted by Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and will be the first in her family to go on to higher education.
The 17-year-old, from Killamarsh, is one of 38 students so far accepted onto the programme run by the Fulbright Commission and the Sutton Trust, competing with more than 2,200 applicants.
She aims to major in English as part of a liberal arts degree course.
Georgia said: “I’m thrilled to have been accepted and I still can’t quite believe it. I’m so lucky to have had so much support and guidance from the Sutton Trust – without them, none of this would have been possible for me.”
Georgia was given a taste of life in the US last summer when she spent a week at a summer school at a top Eastern university, visiting several campuses.
She also received an intense programme of support covering admission tests, college choices and the application process.
The sixth former is a keen singer-songwriter and actor.
