Sheffield University vice-chancellor Sir Keith Burnett was invited to have his cake and eat it – as part of a protest by striking lecturers.
A cake iced with the number 26 was delivered to Sir Keith’s office – to mark the 26 per cent pay increase he has received over the last year.
Lecturers are taking part in a long-running battle over a pay offer of 1 per cent, which they say is effectively a pay cut for the fifth consecutive year.
Sir Keith’s salary is now £374,000 a year, according to official figures.
Pablo Stern, for trade union UCU, said university staff – who walked out for two hours yesterday – had been angered by the ‘incredible’ pay rise.
Pro chancellor Tony Pedder said the university council had decided it needed the best possible leadership and so took a decision in 2012 to ensure it retained the services of Sir Keith.
