VIDEO: Top A Level results for Silverdale pupils

Waiting for Video...

Silverdale School were celebrating some of their best ever marks this morning as pupils received their A-Level results.

Some staff were at the school as early as 6.30am to prepare for students coming in to collect their results at 7am - with two pupils waiting for the doors to open.

Michael Withers, aged 18, and Eoghan McDowell, also 18, were two of seven pupils from the school that got into either the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge.

Michael achieved four A* grades in maths, further maths, chemistry and Spanish to secure his place at Oxford studying law with Spanish law.

He said: “I’m really excited now I know I got in. It was a shock, I was not expecting it at all. It was something I would dream about.”

Eoghan had to take an entrance exam in addition to his A-Levels to secure his place at Cambridge to study maths.

He said: “I was excited, there is an entrance exam called STEP for maths at Cambridge and I knew I passed that last night.

“STEP is quite a lot harder than A-Levels too.”

Hamza Ali, aged 18, from Handsworth, achieved two A* grades in psychology and biology and a B grade in chemistry to confirm his place to study medicine at the University of Sheffield.

He said: “I was surprised at first, I opened it on my own and I just kept checking it. I was relieved, I was just hoping to get in.

“I enjoyed helping others and I was fascinated with medicine since I was young. I realised being a doctor was what I wanted to do.”

George Byran, aged 18, from Ringinglow, had a more agonising wait when he thought his B grade in chemistry would keep him from studying dentistry at the University of Bristol.

He said: “I was nervous at first because obviously I thought I didn’t get in because of the B. I came in at 7am and I sat in the office on my own and just sat there and constantly refreshed track until it opened.”

George eventually loaded the website and found out his place on the course was confirmed.

Samira Hussain, assistant headteacher at the school, said: “It’s been brilliant, probably our best results ever.”

Nine pupils at Silverdale achieved all A* or A grades with over 60 per cent of pupils achieving between A* and B.
