The band from High Green can reflect on the demolition of one of the city’s remaining tower blocks, The Fosters, which has been a landmark in the area for 45 years.

Although structurally sound, the 10-storey block, which was built by the council, has proved hard to let in recent years and needed significant investment to bring it up to standard.

After local people were asked for their views, South Yorkshire Housing Association rehoused remaining tenants in a new environmentally sustainable development of 15 apartments opposite the site. A second phase of construction, due for completion by next August, will bring seven family homes.

The tower block is being demolished by mechanical grabber following a ceremony involving local residents, councillors, SYHA members and Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith.

SYHA chief executive Tony Stacey said: “Putting the development package together was fraught with difficulty. At times it must have felt to the residents that it was never really going to happen. Everyone stuck together though and we have got there in the end.”
