Housing scheme is put on hold

A housing scheme that could give a £1.1m spin-off towards a proposed extension to Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre is still awaiting council approval.

Councillors are supporting in principle proposals by Miller Homes to redevelop the former Oakes Park School site off Matthews Lane, Norton, for 52 houses.

But they held back from granting formal planning permission on Tuesday to further consider the way a proposed £2.2m payment from the developer for the benefit of the public is spent.

It was being suggested that £1.1m goes as the council’s contribution to the Graves ‘Olympic legacy’ project and the rest towards affordable housing. This will be re-examined in time for next month’s planning committee.

The £14m Graves scheme includes two extra tennis courts, a new swimming pool, gym and fitness studios and regional gymnastics facilities as part of a National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine.
