CONTROVERSIAL proposals for a Thai massage parlour to open longer into the evening were rejected this week by councillors after objections from nearby residents.
Protests were lodged about the prospect of extra noise and parking problems if permission was granted for The Starlight in Chesterfield Road, Meersbrook, to stay open until 10pm Mondays to Saturdays instead of being restricted to 7pm.
Planning committee chair Coun John Hesketh said: “Members were convinced that late-night activities and noise would impact upon the quality of neighbours’ lives.”
A protest campaign included 74 names on a letter to the council. One resident said: “Such businesses are an anachronism in today’s society.
“They help reinforce the idea of women as objects and are deeply insulting.”
