New rail bridge to be built at Christmas

LONG-AWAITED work to replace Woodseats Road bridge off Abbeydale Road will finally take place over Christmas, once trains have stopped running.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “The bridge is no longer fit for purpose and this full replacement will not only be much easier to maintain but will also allow the removal of the traffic lights on the bridge and current weight restriction.”

Preparation has already begun with teams working overnight and the bridge will be closed from 9pm on Saturday to Wednesday, December 28.

A footbridge will allow pedestrians to cross during the work, although this will have to be closed for short periods during the demolition and the lifting in of the new bridge.

The project is being financed by the council.
