Sheffield MP Clive Betts is urging action be taken to stop raw sewage spilling into in the Shirtcliffe Valley.

“In heavy rain, raw sewage leaks across public footpaths,” he said. “This is totally unacceptable.”

The MP for South East took up community complaints with Yorkshire Water, and said he was told “the options for a solution are all currently unaffordable”.

“I find it difficult to believe that this would be the response if it was happening adjacent to the chief executive’s home.”

Pat Howells, of the Friends of the Shirtcliffe Valley, said: “Yet again this week, sewage is strewn over whole sections of the valley and across public footpaths.”

Yorkshire Water apologised for sewage spilling from a sewer and said it was trying to find a solution to a complex issue, with the sewer running through ancient woodland. Some repairs had already been carried out.

The company responded within two hours to any reports of a sewer not working properly. “These incidents only occur in times of heavy rainfall.”
