PLANS have been announced for 44 homes on a former steelworks site which has been derelict for 80 years.
The Co-operative Group wants to build the two, three and four-bedroom homes on land off Laird’s Way, Sheffield Road, Penistone.
The area was formerly the Cammell Laird steelworks, which closed in the 1930s, and the land has been derelict ever since.
Matthew Stafford, of the Co-op, said the proposals would help to boost the local economy and help to fill a need identified by Barnsley Council for new homes in the Penistone area.
He said: “The application provides a unique opportunity to secure the development of vacant and derelict brownfield land, which is currently a wasted resource.
“The use of this brownfield site for housing could make an immediate contribution to Barnsley’s housing needs.”
