SUMMER in South Yorkshire seems to be getting later every year.

And the sun has certainly had his hat on this week, with residents of Sheffield flocking to the city centre to soak up the rays following a dismal season of washouts.

Downpours which blighted the months of June, July and August looked set to make an unwelcome return at the start of September.

But this week the area has enjoyed temperatures of up to 21 degrees - just in time for youngsters’ return to school following the six-week break.

And it may even be time to slap on the sun cream, as forecasters have predicted warmth and sunshine to continue throughout the weekend across South Yorkshire.

A spokeswoman for the Meteogroup said: “On Saturday it could be a cloudy start but it will then begin brightening up through the afternoon. It should be a little bit warmer.

“On Sunday there will be more sunshine through the day. It should stay dry both days and temperatures will be 23 degrees on Saturday and 24 degrees on Sunday.”

Don’t pack away those brollies just yet though... showers are expected on Monday.
