ROADS will be closed and temporary traffic lights put in place when work is carried out on water pipes in Barnsley from next week.

Work is taking place on Staincross Common between Moorland Avenue and Wakefield Road from Tuesday, as engineers replace more than 550 metres of cast iron pipes with new plastic mains.

The junction of The Balk and Shaw Lane is being closed while the roadworks are under way and a signed diversion will be operating for motorists.

Yorkshire Water says the new pipe will improve water quality and reduce the risk of bursts.

Staincross Common will then be shut for five weeks from September 3 for cleaning work to be carried out on old water pipes by workers from Balfour Beatty.

Drivers are being advised to seek alternative routes to beat lengthy delays.

The project is part of a £20 million overhaul of South Yorkshire’s water system.

Batch manager Lee Boshell said: “Unfortunately roadworks are disruptive but by working closely with Barnsley Council we’re trying to keep that disruption to a minimum.

“The pipes we are laying are very hard wearing which will reduce the risk of bursts and leaks.”

Residents are being urged to be aware of the risk of bogus callers.
