Sheffield’s gritters have travelled the equivalent of five times round the world in what was an unprecedented winter.
As the gritting season officially draws to a close, Sheffield Council and contractor Amey have calculated the city’s fleet of 25 gritters has travelled a combined distance of almost 124,000 miles since last October.
On average, Sheffield gritters are called upon 91 times a year.
However, this winter, the total number of call outs hit 150 – an increase of 60 per cent.
Efforts to keep roads open were praised by Richard Wright, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce executive director.
He said: “We have had a lot of positive feedback from business about how the city dealt with the snow.
“Inevitably there was some disruption, but generally the issues were dealt with quickly and traffic kept flowing. We would like to thank all of the team for their hard work this winter.”
