Epic voyage on high seas for daring Richard

AN AMATEUR sailor from Sheffield who is part of a 12-man yacht crew in a round-the-world race cooked up a storm on a break from the open waves.

Richard Abraham, aged 36, of Crookes, who normally works as a product manager, is among the crew of the Edinburgh Inspiring Capital yacht taking part in the Clipper Round the World Race.

And during a break in Singapore, Richard and his shipmates visited the East Asia Institute of Management where they helped staff at the university to prepare an array of healthy Singaporean – and Scottish – dishes.

The stopover at Singapore followed a gruelling 30 day, 8,700 kilometre sail from Australia’s Gold Coast.

The Edinburgh crew are participating in the event – the world’s longest yacht race and the brainchild of sailing legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston – to promote organ transplants.

Richard’s crewmates include two kidney transplant patients, a liver transplant patient and a double lung transplant recipient.

They hope publicity achieved by the team will reduce the national shortage of organs for transplantation by showing the potential that donations have to transform lives.

The Edinburgh Inspiring Capital crew has now set sail for Qingdao, China, from Keppel Marina at Singapore.

The Clipper Round the World Race was established 15 years ago by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail solo and non-stop around the world.

The aim is to give ordinary people the chance to do something ‘truly extraordinary’. More people have climbed Everest than have raced around the world under sail.

No sailing experience is required, the minimum age is 18, and there is no upper age limit for participants.
