A BOXING star was the guest of honour at the opening of a new fitness facility in a Sheffield park.

Former cruiserweight world champion Johnny Nelson cut the ribbon on the Charnock Park fitness circuit, installed for local residents to improve their health.

The circuit features a running track and gym equipment, while elsewhere in the park there are picnic tables, benches, a community orchard and a wild flower garden.

Crowds at the opening day browsed stalls and enjoyed archery displays, while youngsters were kept amused by a children’s entertainer.

Workers from Activity Sheffield were also on hand to provide fitness tips, and Johnny signed autographs for thrilled fans.

The gym equipment includes a ski machine and exercise bike, as well as a leg press and cross trainer.

The circuit was supported with a grant from the Big Lottery community spaces fund.
