EVEN Mr Punch is giving his backing to St Luke’s Hospice as he goes under the hammer at an auction of classic toys on Saturday.

A complete set of hand crafted Punch and Judy characters – including Punch, his wife Judy, the policeman and the crocodile – have been donated to the hospice, along with a full size puppet theatre.

The glove puppets were used for many years to entertain visitors to St Luke’s summer fair, but had been kept in storage until they were rediscovered recently and it was realised they could be of value. AE Dowse will auction them in Scotland Street as part of a sale starting at 11am. The puppets could fetch between £250 and £400.
