Family run Doncaster business to close down after 42 years this weekend

The Carpet Shop in Nether Hall Road, which has been run by husband and wife team Steve and Pat Jones for more than four decades, will close its doors for the last time on Saturday.

The couple, who started the business from scratch, are standing down from the home furnishings store which they have seen blossom since opening in 1974.

Daughter Lisa Hart said: "They are very sad to be closing the doors but can't go on forever. I know that there are many local people who will want to say farewell."

Steve, 67 and Pat, 68, from Thorpe-in-Balne have owned and run the shop since its opening.

Added Lisa: "They built the business from scratch and started with only a van and some sample books, gradually acquiring houses and converting them on Nether Hall Road - which is the shop people see today.

"It has been a real family business, employing three generations of the Jones family at one point and became well known for the vintage style van which my dad built and used for many years."

The shop will close for the last time on Saturday with the pair remaining as landlords in charge of the building which will be divided up among tenants.

Said Lisa: "They are renting out the shop so will be landlords in their retirement.

"My dad has also been given the task of re-vamping his kit car that he made in the 80's and mothballed nearly 20 years ago - my sister has told him that she'd like to go to her wedding in it next August!

"My mum won her battle with leukaemia after having a bone marrow transplant in 1984 - one of the first in the world - so she is looking forward to a well earned rest and doing lots of baking and visiting grandchildren.

"I also suspect they will be spending longer and longer in Tenerife over the winters as they go there every Christmas."
