A DEDICATED charity volunteer who spent decades helping armed forces veterans has died.

Roy Elms, aged 83, was former county secretary of SSAFA Forces Help, which assists ex service personnel in times of crisis.

Mr Elms, who was retired and lived in Bessacarr, Doncaster, had been an active volunteer for the organisation for more than 20 years.

Geoff Norton, South Yorkshire President of SSAFA who is based at Endcliffe Hall, Sheffield, said: “Roy had been county secretary for many years and a volunteer for 20 to 30. He performed his duties with a great deal of diligence. He will be sadly missed.”

Over his time with SSAFA, Mr Elms helped hundreds of people and was awarded the MBE last year. He was married to Moyra and was a father of three and grandfather of seven. As well as working for SSAFA, he was also a member of Doncaster Rotary Club and a keen golfer.

The funeral takes place today at Rose Hill Crematorium, Doncaster, at 2pm.
