A bandleader brought a touch of brass to his back garden to mark a very special birthday this week.

Norman Cawkwell, of Woodhouse, celebrated his 80th birthday, and to commemorate the occasion the S13 Brass Ensemble played on his lawn.

The ensemble was formed by Norman - pictured above - in 1981, and plays a number of different styles from hymns to classical brass music and versions of chart hits.

Members’ ages range from eight upwards, and the group also has facilities to teach youngsters aged nine and older how to play instruments.

The band teams up with a German group every four years and also plays at weddings, birthday parties and military events.
