AN OUTDOOR gym has been installed in Penistone, ready for people to get fit in the New Year.

The Penistone Fit Zone includes equipment more often found in a leisure centre, such as a chest press, bikes, cross trainers, pull-ups, a leg press and Tai Chi wheels.

A spokesman for Barnsley Council said: “The outdoor gym has created somewhere where everyone is welcome, at any time of day, at no cost.

“It provides equipment to provide cardio, tone and strength workouts to users. An official opening ceremony will take place in the new year.”

The council’s cabinet member for environment and culture, Coun Tim Cheetham, added: “In the current climate, gym membership is a luxury that a lot of people can’t afford.

“This will provide a great opportunity for people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels to exercise for free.”

Funding for the gym, which was built by contractor Park Leisure on Penistone Recreation Ground, has come from the organisations Fields in Trust and Waste Recycling Environmental Limited.

The chief executive of Fields in Trust, Alison Moore-Gwyn, said: “Outdoor gyms are a great way for everyone to be able to participate in exercise and reap the rewards of improved physical and mental health.

“A whole new exercise experience has arrived in Penistone with the creation of an outdoor gym at the recreation ground - now ready for use.”
