A COMMUNITY group set up to develop a hydro-electric energy generator in Sheffield is calling for people to use the festive season as an excuse to invest.

Sheffield Renewables, the organisation behind plans to build a community-owned energy scheme on the River Don’s Jordan Dam, is selling community shares as last-minute Christmas gifts.

Members of the public can invest on the behalf of a friend or loved ones, with share prices beginning at £250.

Once up and running, the generator will create enough green electricity to power 80 homes and will reduce Sheffield’s carbon emissions. The project is due to be completed by the end of 2013.
