PREPARATIONS are under way for one of the Sheffield education world’s nights of the year.

Seventy top students will receive Spark awards from Sheffield College for their outstanding achievements at a ceremony sponsored by City and Guilds.

The red carpet event is at Sheffield City College on Granville Road tomorrow.

Aviation and media make-up students will greet VIPs and guests, styled on the theme of a Butterfly Ball. Catering and hospitality students will provide canapés and a buffet.

The college’s executive director Julie Byrne said: “This event celebrates how the college is changing the lives of young people, giving them their chance to shine, and is an opportunity for us to congratulate them on their achievements.

“Our learners are diverse. Some are high achievers. Others have overcome adversity to progress. They all have one thing in common - a determination and commitment to succeed.”

There are four award categories - the best student from each vocational subject area, students who have shown outstanding achievement against the odds, the best apprentice from each vocational subject area and the most supportive staff as voted by learners.
