A trainee doctor and a teacher were among the prize-winning girls who took the plunge at a glitzy pageant in Sheffield.

Wickersley school teacher Laura Gregory and University of Sheffield medicine student Hannah Higgins, of Upper Haugh, are among the five girls who have dived head-first into the Miss Scuba UK contest.

The glittering event, at Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield city centre, was held to find the five finalists who will undertake a variety of marine conservation challenges and diving activities in Cyprus and Egypt before an overall winner is announced later this year.

Organiser Jill Faulkner said: “Prior to the stage show, all the finalists were interviewed and judged on their marine conservation and diving knowledge. They then each had a personal interview with all our judges.

“The overall winner, who will be announced in October, will fly out to Malaysia in November to represent the UK in the international finals.”

The other winners were Sarah Winterbottom from London, Helen MacGregor from Cheshire and Emily Kishere from Dorset.

After the event, the five UK finalists met and went diving with armed forces veterans Chris Baker and Kevin Pryke, who have both been injured in combat.

The girls presented a cheque for nearly £2,400 to the pair, who accepted it on behalf of charity Deptherapy, which seeks to rehabilitate injured armed forces personnel through the medium of scuba diving.

The girls will meet more veterans while they are at dive school in Egypt so they can see first hand how the Deptherapy money is spent.
