A Sheffield community centre is among a number of community projects offered grants to help improve their facilities.

The Veolia Environmental Trust gave St Mary’s Community Centre, Bramall Lane, Highfield, a £13,928 grant to renovate their lift, which is in a poor state.

Sheffield Church of the Nazarene, on Fitzroy Road, Heeley, has received a £35,000 grant to replace their outdated toilet facilities with modern, more accessible ones.

And £11,205 has gone to Thurgoland Village Hall, Roper Lane, Thurgolane, to repair the electrics and replace the ceiling.

The grants were awarded through the Landfill Communities Fund, which has awarded over £3.8 million to projects in South Yorkshire since 1997.

Competition for the grants, which are handed out annually, is said to be increasing.
