‘Greenest’ Store Off Its Marks
Marc Bolland (M&S Chief Executive) and Allison Burnley (New Store Manager at M&S Simply Food at Ecclesall Road) at the ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday to launch the store.
MARKS and Spencer chief executive Marc Bolland officially opened a Simply Food store in Ecclesall Road, which the company says is its greenest ever.
He joined store manager Allison Burnley in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the building, which was constructed from 100% recycled material, including bricks from an old mill.
Among environmental features are a sedum roof and a green ‘living wall’ to encourage wildlife habitats, the use of rainwater to supply the toilets, harnessing heat from refrigeration units to heat the premises and the installation of electric car charging points in the car park.
Director of property and store development at Marks & Spencer, Clem Constantine, said the store, on the site of a former car showroom, represented “a big milestone in our sustainable construction programme”.
He added: “Each of these sustainable features is remarkable in its own right. However, by bringing them all together in one development, something that is rarely done by retailers, we will achieve a whole that is worth far more than the sum of its parts.”
