This was the scene when a gritter - sent to deal with a frozen Sheffield road early this morning - came unstuck itself on the treacherous ice and overturned.
The wagon slipped over while navigating Douse Croft Lane, in the Mayfield Valley, shedding its load of grit across the ground.
Resident Michael Jarvis, who took the photo, said the gritter narrowly avoided plunging into a stream and that recovery vehicles attended to shift the stricken truck.
The driver and his assistant, who were on board the wagon, were left ‘shaken’ by the incident but were not injured.
Mr Jarvis said rural roads in the Mayfield Valley were taken off Sheffield’s precautionary gritting routes as part of council cuts.
“A number of cars were abandoned here yesterday evening, including my own, and the police were called out mid-evening to assist with a vehicle that had skidded and was blocking the road,” he said.
Temperatures plummeted to -2C last night and are not expected to reach more than 4C today.
