A warning has been issued to motorists across Sheffield as temperatures plunge this weekend.

Plummeting temperatures which have hit the city throughout the week are set to continue throughout the weekend.

Met Office predictions show forecasts for freezing temperatures early today, while sleet could fall tomorrow evening.

This week also marks four years since a huge blizzard blanketed Sheffield under as much as 12 inches of snow.

Sheffield Council has been gritting on high ground and roads liable to standing water in an effort to stop streets from freezing over.

Coun Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for streetscene, said: “The Streets Ahead team are ready for the predicted cold temperatures this weekend. They have access to the best weather forecasting equipment and will be out gritting our city when they need to.”

Jim Pursglove, Streets Ahead’s highways operations manager said: “We are fully prepared should any bad weather arrive and have people available 24/7 to treat priority routes. In addition to 20 gritters, we also supply grit to 1,700 grit bins across Sheffield.

“Although our winter service delivery is robust, we cannot guarantee that even treated roads will be completely free from ice.

“I would therefore urge people to be on their guard and to follow simple winter driving tips during bad weather.”
