Sheffield Hallam University is teaming up with organisers of the Tour de France for the Yorkshire Grand Départ in July.
A sponsorship agreement will involve students in more than 200 volunteering and other roles over the three days, underlining the university’s reputation in running sports degree programmes and sports research centres and its students volunteering for events such as the Beijing Olympics and Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Hallam becomes the first university to partner the Tour in this way, and the partnership was announced by Vice-Chancellor Prof Philip Jones and Peter Dodd, of tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire.
Prof Jones said: “In July, the eyes of the world will be on Sheffield. Our exclusive partnership with the Grand Départ continues Sheffield Hallam’s proud history of being a major educational partner at global sporting events. This is a natural fit for Sheffield Hallam.”
