It uses multiple cameras to reveal in detail for the first time the terror and triumph of real-life interviews, highlighting every aspect from handshake to potentially life-changing job offer.

The series takes viewers into the heart of one of Britain’s last ‘secret spaces’: the interview room. It’s simple and authentic: just real candidates competing against each other for real jobs, filmed in microscopic detail, capturing every nuance. From a teenager looking for their first job to a single mum returning to work and an OAP seeking independence and self-worth, the intense and nail-biting process is the same.

In each episode there are two jobs on offer, from a variety of businesses across the UK. In this first episode, Low Cost Vans bosses Rod and Lorraine from south Wales are interviewing for a customer service advisor.

Managing Director Rod thinks he’s a great employer and says ‘I’d love to work for me’. They’ve selected an eclectic mix of candidates. Single mum Jody, who’s 34, is terrified as she hasn’t interviewed in 12 years, while Ian, who’s 51, wants to turn his life around since he was recently made redundant.

Others who are anxious for this position include a haunted house tour guide, an over-enthusiastic PA and a charismatic product demonstrator. Meanwhile, Philippa D’Arcy and her daughter Bertie from Berkshire are turning their luxury family home, Wickham House, into an exclusive wedding and events venue. They’re searching for an assistant manager who is ‘a jack of all trades and a master of them all!’ Interviewees include Amy, who’s 33 and ‘dreams of working in the big house’ and recent graduate Isabel, who’s 22 and has rubbed shoulders with dukes and princess. As with every job on offer in The Job Interview, only one candidate can triumph and be offered each job.
