A FORMER editor of the Sheffield Telegraph and The Star is backing a campaign to raise awareness of heart conditions and cardiac treatment – grateful for the response to his own experience.

Alan Powell, aged 66, is supporting initiatives during National Heart Month, including a Love Your Heart event at the Northern General Hospital on Valentine’s Day.

It was while travelling to work at The Star two years ago when Alan suffered a heart attack. He was rushed to the Northern General, spending 10 days in intensive care and being discharged after three weeks.

Alan, who lives in Dronfield, received a primary angioplasty – a procedure to insert a mesh stent in the coronary artery to increase blood flow to the heart.

He said: “I have nothing but high praise for all of the staff, from the doctors and nurses to the support staff who were involved in my care and recovery.

“The event is the ideal opportunity for anyone who has any issues or are worried about their heart to get some information. People should not hesitate and they will be able to meet some of the best NHS workers in the UK.”

More than 20 stalls will be on display across the Huntsman and Clock Tower dining rooms between 11am and 3pm on February 14, ranging from specialist nursing teams and rehabilitation staff to support groups.

Heart and cardiovascular disease is the biggest killer in the UK, accounting for around one in every three deaths. At the Northern General alone, over 500 permanent pacemakers and internal defibrillators were fitted and more than 1,600 angioplasty procedures were carried out during 2011.

Julie Bashforth, a heart failure nurse specialist, said: “Valentine’s Day is a day where we reflect about love and we think that this is a good opportunity to Love your Heart.”
