Doctors are being encouraged to bid for funding to extend their hours and to stay open seven days a week.

A Government pilot scheme will see £50m offered to GP groups that want to assess initiatives including longer opening hours, online appointment booking and greater use of email and phone consultations.

Idris Griffiths, chief operating officer of NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We have forward-thinking and innovative practices in Sheffield and we hope there will be success in the required bidding process for the pilot David Cameron announced. The programme fits in well with our commitment to making sure local people receive the most appropriate care at the right time, in the right place.”
