PATIENTS leaving the accident and emergency department at the Northern General Hospital and surgical wards at the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire are to be presented with a ‘Family and Friends Test’ from next month.

They will be given a card and asked: “How likely are you to recommend our ward/A&E department to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?” Possible replies range from ‘extremely likely’ to ‘extremely unlikely’.

Part of a national survey of patient feedback, it will be further rolled out by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust by April. Chief executive Sir Andrew Cash said the test “will be a particularly powerful indicator of where we are getting it right or where we have more work to do”.
