Trading standards officers in Sheffield are writing to local shopkeepers to warn them that the sale of illegal alcohol will not be tolerated.
It follows the council withdrawing the licence for a Spar store on Richmond Road after it was caught selling fake and toxic booze.
Council cabinet member Jack Scott said: “We know that a minority of retailers across the city are selling the stuff, and it is causing damage to the reputation of our retail sector. This illegal trade must be eradicated from the streets of Sheffield.”
Penalties for offenders include a fine of up to £5,000, a criminal record and the permanent loss of their alcohol licence.
