Lauren Hughes is swapping her long locks for a much more striking style – but it’s all for a good cause!
The 16-year-old, from Gleadless Valley, has promised to brave the clippers next month in aid of the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.
But her mum Kim Mappin revealed Lauren is feeling ‘slightly nervous’ about going through with the fundraising dare.
“Her hair has never been so long,” said Kim, aged 43.
“But rather than have it cut shorter, she wondered why she didn’t just have it all off for charity.”
Lauren, a former pupil at Westfield School in Sothall, is a catering apprentice at the New Inn pub on Hemsworth Road, where the fundraising head shave is happening on Friday, November 15.
Kim said her daughter was inspired to raise money for the hospital as friends and close relatives have been affected by cancer.
She said: “Her best friend from school’s mum has got cancer, and my uncle died of it a few years ago.
“Lauren’s nan had it too, but she survived.
“Weston Park were absolutely brilliant, they keep you informed and make sure you’re being supported.”
The mum, a barmaid at the New Inn, said: “I don’t think Lauren’s worried so much about having her hair shaved, it’s more the attention she’s going to get.
“She’s well-known in the area and it’s not just something she’s going to have done at home, there’ll be quite a few people in the pub at the time.
“But she’s a tomboy and she’s played football all her life, so she won’t be that bothered.
“There should be quite a good turnout – it’ll be a Friday night so I’ve no idea how much money we’ll raise, we just want as much as possible.”
