There are just four standalone specialist children’s hospitals in the whole of the UK and we’re lucky enough to have one right on our doorstep.

Last year more than 245,000 patients passed through its doors alone.

Those visiting included thousands of local children as well as families who travelled from across the country, and even the world, to benefit from the hospital’s specialist services, in areas such as neurosciences, muscle and bone, clinical genetics, oncology and major trauma.

Built in 1876, the hospital has grown and developed massively over the years, but many of its wards were built in the 1960s and have become tired and cramped. The building also has little outdoor space.

The Children’s Hospital Charity launched its ‘Make it Better’ appeal in 2012 with the aim of raising £10 million regionally by 2016, to extend and transform the existing hospital.

Money raised through the appeal will help create the best possible environment for children to get better more quickly, delivering world-class facilities to match the world-class expertise already provided.

The appeal will fund a brand new building and much-needed outdoor space including:

- an easy to access, spacious outpatients department to help children feel more comfortable when visiting hospital

- three brand new wards with 66 per cent single rooms, en suite facilities and parent beds, creating privacy and space to recover from treatment

- a new ward expanding the number of beds in the refurbished building

- basement car park with 60 spaces making it easier to visit

- a stimulating sensory garden for children to get some fresh air

- an outdoor space for a reflection and respite.

The Children’s Hospital Charity director David Vernon-Edwards said: “Anything raised from £10 to £200 will make a huge difference to our patients.

“We are very grateful The Star is supporting Make it Better Day as every penny raised from its readers will go directly towards funding a £25,000 single occupancy room within the new facility, creating a friendlier environment for patients and their families during their stay.

“So far over £3 million has been donated and raised which we are delighted with. But we have £7 million still to raise by 2016 to reach our target and transform the hospital into a brighter, child friendly environment for our young patients and their families.

“So please do your bit and get involved in Make it Better Day.”

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED

So what can you do to help Make it Better?

Anybody can take part in Make it Better Day – 24 hours of mass fundraising throughout Sheffield and beyond with the sole aim of raising as much money as possible for the appeal.

Simply think of a way you can raise money with your family, friends or colleagues to help The Star reach its £25,000 target to fund a brand new single occupancy room at the children’s hospital.

Last year’s efforts included dress-up days, cake sales, coffee mornings, wear-a-loud-shirt-to-work day, jumble sales and charity football matches.

James Mitchinson, editor at The Star, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be supporting The Children’s Hospital Charity. Together with our readers we can improve the children’s hospital and make it better for children in their care.

“If just 25,000 of our readers donate £1 to the cause we will reach our target to fund a single occupancy room, which will later be named by our readers as thank you for their generous support.”
