During the month-long fundraiser, which began on Friday, families, friends, businesses and community groups will raise money for Sheffield’s only hospice by holding pie and pea suppers.

Sheffield Hallam MP Mr Clegg was VIP guest at the first event, at St Luke’s Hospice Therapies and Rehabilitation Centre.

“It’s impossible to overstate just what a fantastic job St Luke’s Hospice does for Sheffielders with life-limiting illnesses and their families,” said Mr Clegg, as he sat down with patients and guests for his pie and peas, complete with a dash of Henderson’s Relish.

“It’s important that we all do what we can to support them and there is no tastier way to do this than get involved in The Great Pie and Peas Up campaign.

“It’s a great excuse to get the Henderson’s Relish out of the cupboard and indulge in pie and peas with friends, family or colleagues.”

The funds will go towards the new £5 million In Patient Unit at St Luke’s.

The Star is supporting The Great Pie and Peas Up as part of its own campaign to raise £100,000 to pay for one of the 14 single rooms in the new centre.

People and organisations are being urged to host their own pie and pea events.
