More than 100 protesters stepped up a campaign to save Westfield Health Centre.

Patients, staff and trade union officials were joined by MP Clive Betts and councillor Isobel Bowler in a demonstration at the centre, which faces closure when its sole GP, Dr Gurcharan Singh Chadha, retires on December 31.

NHS England has said the ‘only realistic option’ was to shut the surgery because of a drop in demand, but has since said no final decision has been taken pending consultation.

Joan Keane, of the GMB union, said there had been no consultation prior to the closure threat, and there were no measures to protect the 2,000 patients, many of them vulnerable.
