Organisers will be hoping for a smooth run when more than 6,000 women take to the streets for Sheffield’s first Race for Life through the city centre on Sunday.
A number of road closures will be in place from 8.15am, ahead of the women-only race which begins at 9.30am in Arundel Gate.
They affect all the main areas of the city centre, including Arundel Gate, Barker’s Pool, Charter Row, Devonshire Street and Furnvial Square, and all one-way systems will be temporarily revoked.
The roads will be re-opened as soon as it is safe to do so – and all closures will be lifted by 1.30pm.
Race-goers and supporters are invited to use park and ride services at Malin Bridge, Meadowhall and Valley Centertainment – from where trams to the city centre will be operating regularly – and also from Tesco store in Abbeydale Road, who are laying on buses every 10 minutes into town.
Parking for blue badge holders is available only at the Eyre Street APOCA car park and Brown Street.
Organisers say the best places for spectators include the Peace Gardens, Barker’s Pool, outside the Town Hall, on Devonshire Green and along Fargate.
Among the many people affected by cancer taking part will be mum and daughter Christine Lewis and Sam Plumtree, along with Sam’s six-year-old daughter Emma.
Both Christine and Sam have survived breast cancer – Christine’s being picked up during a routine mamogram six years ago when she was 53, and Sam following the discovery of a lump four years ago when she was aged just 30.
It was found to be caused by the gene passed down from her dad’s side – but Emma is still too young to be tested to see if she has inherited it, too.
Christine, from Mosborough, said: “We do the Race For Life because we feel it is a way of raising money to help future generations, including our own future generations.”
