GPs in Sheffield are asking the public to help the NHS cope during the busy festive period by ensuring they use the right health service for the right condition.
Up to 40 per cent of people attending accident and emergency departments, minor injury units and urgent care centres are discharged needing no treatment, the NHS says.
Dr Marion Sloan, of Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We are lucky to have a variety of local NHS services throughout Sheffield.
“Many of us have been busy planning our festive celebrations and holidays for Christmas and New Year, but it’s important we are prepared medically as well.
“If you are going away this holiday season, make sure you pack all your medication along with your presents so your Christmas doesn’t get ruined by a medical emergency.
“Most GP practices and pharmacies will operate their normal bank holiday openings over the key festive days, and be open as usual on days that aren’t bank holidays.”
