Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital highly rated

A HOSPITAL in Sheffield has been given a glowing report by the health watchdog – with standards of care being highly rated and staff praised for their ‘efficient and professional manner’.
Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission paid an unannounced visit to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, checking wards and speaking to staff, patients and their relatives.
The inspection report said patients felt respected, had their privacy and dignity upheld and that workers were well-supported by senior staff.
The results have been published just a month after the Care Quality Commission gave top marks to the Northern General Hospital, in Fir Vale.
Inspectors visited the Hallamshire’s Q1 and Q2 wards – the geriatric and stroke services – as well as the day surgery unit and the M2 ward, which looks after patients with respiratory problems and pulmonary hypertension.
They spoke to 22 staff members, 12 patients and five relatives.
“Throughout their visit, patients were positive about their stay at the Hallamshire and told inspectors they felt respected and that staff were polite, courteous and approachable,” the report said.
One patient said they had been ‘treated politely and courteously by all staff from receptionist to consultants’ while another said they were ‘really impressed with all aspects of care’.
Inspectors said medics were seen to respect patients’ privacy by taking them into quiet rooms when interviewing them.
Dr David Throssell, medical director at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This report is a strong endorsement of the high standards of care at our trust, and recognises the hard work of our staff to make sure privacy and dignity standards which patients rightfully expect are met at all times.
“It also reflects the work being done to make sure our staff feel supported in their roles.
“Unannounced visits are an opportunity to get a valuable snapshot of the quality of care at our hospitals and, importantly, patients’ own views on their treatment and care.
The positive comments from patients reflect their confidence in our staff, the satisfaction with the care they are receiving and the attention to personal needs they can expect.”
