Walk your way to a healthy life, urge city GPs

Doctors in Sheffield are urging city residents to improve their health by walking more as part of a month-long campaign.

National Walking Month runs throughout May and aims to promote the benefits of the activity, which include reducing the risk of heart disease, asthma, strokes, diabetes and cancer.

Heeley GP Dr Ollie Hart, the NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group’s Move More project lead, said: “Brisk walks are one of the easiest free ways to become healthier. It is often underrated as a form of exercise but just 30 minutes a day can have a great impact.

“Moderate physical activity like walking, cycling, or sports can improve a person’s health significantly by balancing energy, controlling weight, improving fitness and more.”
