Mr Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam, visited St Maries Catholic Primary School, in Fulwood Road, on Friday 10 February to hear all about the British Heart Foundations (BHF) and Resuscitation Council UKs (RCUK) work promoting the teaching of Emergency Life Support (ELS) skills in schools. Children and teachers spoke to Mr Clegg about ELS and how their training could mean the difference between life and death - because it means taking action in the vital minutes before professional help arrives. They showed him what to do if someone has a cardiac arrest  including how to do vital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)  and he had a go himself.

PUPILS at a Sheffield school didn’t waste any time telling MP Nick Clegg how important every second is when it comes to saving a life.

Deputy Prime Minister Mr Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam, visited St Marie’s Catholic Primary on Fulwood Road, Fulwood, to find out more about the British Heart Foundation and the Resuscitation Council UK’s work to promote emergency life support teaching in schools.

Children and teachers explained the training could mean the difference between life and death - because it means taking action in the vital minutes before professional help arrives.

They also showed the MP what to do if someone has a heart attack - and he got stuck in and had a go himself using a dummy.

Mr Clegg said: “It was inspiring to see young people learning such valuable life-saving skills.”
