SUPER-FAST broadband is to be expanded in Sheffield to include 40,000 more homes and businesses.

Sharrow and Wadsley Bridge are the latest local areas to benefit from BT’s fibre broadband programme.

The high-speed technology is to become available there by spring 2013 in the latest phase of the £2.5 million scheme.

It will take the number of Sheffield homes and businesses being part of the network to more than 157,000 in total.

Richard Wright, Sheffield Chamber executive director, welcomed the move.

He said: “I have often said I am optimistic for this region within an international economy and this announcement underlines that.”

Nearly 80,000 premises in Sheffield have access to super-fast net speeds.
