SNOW wasn’t going to stop swimmers from taking their first dip of the season at the open-air pool in Hathersage.

Up to 400 customers braved the cold on the opening day, last Saturday, and up to 300 followed on the Sunday.

The chilly bit was getting from the changing rooms to the pool, which is heated to 28 degrees C.

But many swimmers went for the full experience. “Most people were jumping into the snow, then into the pool,” said manager Michael Wellington.

The first day always attracts a crowd wanting to take to the waters surrounded by the Peak District hills, usually around 500.

Last weekend’s turnout was “very surprising given the conditions”, said Michael, “but it was a nice surprise. When we came in on Friday to get the pool ready, we weren’t expecting to be busy.

“It was good to see people make the effort.

“It was quite crazy, but there was a fantastic atmosphere. It was something a bit different.”

Hathersage Pool is now open every day until September 28.
