Sheffield’s junior men’s ice skating champion Peter Hallam, aged 18, who lives in Wincobank, gets up at 5am every day to train at iceSheffield in Attercliffe.
A member of the centre’s Academy of Excellence, and coached by Dawn Peckett, the 26-time gold medallist in the junior men’s discipline has competed around the world.
The Christmas ice skating show I’ll Be Home For Christmas will be performed at iceSheffield from December 5 to 7.
I really enjoy spending my time away from the rink at Centertainment. It’s so close to iceSheffield where I train everyday and has a great variety of restaurants. I also enjoy going to the cinema as it’s a great way to unwind after a hard days training.
It’s also close to the rink and easy for me to get to from my home in Wincobank. The shopping centre has a great range of clothes shops and restaurants to choose from and it’s a perfect place to go to treat myself and spend my hard earned wages! The Oasis is brilliant, with so many new restaurants.
Without a doubt Nandos is my favourite restaurant and I’m lucky that Sheffield has plenty of the restaurants to choose from. As a figure skater I need a high protein diet and the chicken at Nandos really hits the spot. I definitely recommend it.
Ever since I started ice skating ten years ago I have absolutely loved it. The skating lessons at iceSheffield were a brilliant way for me to start, and the coaches are, in my opinion, are among the very best in the country, especially my coach Dawn Peckett. I’m very lucky in that ice skating has allowed me to travel all over the world and I’ve seen some absolutely amazing places. My favourite is probably either Graz in Austria or Courchevel in France.
I love walking around Rother Valley Country Park with my girlfriend Charlotte. We’ve been together for seven months and it’s been great having someone so supportive around. She helps kick me out of bed at 5am in the morning so that I get to training on time! Well often go on runs together and also enjoy walking around the park to unwind after a day’s skating. I’m also working towards my level one ice skating coaching qualification and have started teaching Charlotte how to skate properly! Another bonus is her mum’s cooking is awesome!
It’s always great to get back home, especially after being away competing. My family are always really supportive and have made lots of sacrifices to allow me to compete in the sport that I love. It’s great to go back there and chill out when I’m not training and Wincobank is a great area.
My home is my sanctuary! I don’t often get to lie in because of training at 6am every morning but on the odd occasion I don’t have to be up, my bed is definitely my favourite thing! As a skater we have a strict training regime so having a day to recover is essential.
Computer games offer a great escape. I really enjoy gaming and use it as a great way to relax and unwind after training. My favourite game at the moment is probably Tomb Raider for the computer.
English Institute of Sport Sheffield
I use the gym at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield as part of my weekly training routine. As a skater, it is important to maintain core strength so I use the weights machines to build muscle. The training area at the new Fitness Unlimited gym is a great addition and really helps with my core specific workouts.
