Film school graduate Ellie Ragdale, 24, despaired of finding work in the creative industries and returned to her home city and decided to set something up for herself and friends.

The result is Handmade Cinema, a community cinema project for local families, which is organising its first interactive screening – of The Aristocats – on Saturday from 4pm at the Old Junior School in Sharrow.

Audiences are invited to dress in cat costumes to see Disney’s 1970 animated tale of feline love in 1910 Paris and to soak up the Parisian atmosphere with a live jazz band, cat face painting and French cuisine,

Ellie got the idea for Handmade after visiting the British Federation of Film Societies’ roadshow at the Showroom and then hooked up with somewhereto_, the Lottery-funded mentoring service for 16-25 year olds providing access to free space - in this case the Old School at Sharrow.

“In the future I would like to do films in other site specific locations which would tie into the film itself,” says Ellie, “and I am now exploring opportunities for further funding.”
