Job is icing on the cake for Sheffield’s Toni

A YOUNG baker is enjoying the sweet smell of success after landing her dream job through The Star’s We Want to Work campaign.

Aspiring cook Toni Stones was snapped up by Sheffield-based cupcake business Fancie after spending months hunting for a job.

She was unable to complete a Sheffield College course in catering but gained a wealth of skills and accolades during her time there.

Fed-up of a life on benefits she featured in The Star’s campaign to pitch herself to potential employers.

Fancie owner Amanda Perry, whose empire has expanded to four shops and a website, spotted her - and now Toni, 22, has been taken on as an apprentice at the newly-opened cafe in Ecclesall Road. She said: “I absolutely love it. It’s a dream come true!”

As part of her training Toni, of Arbourthorne, will complete an NVQ in kitchen services and food hygiene.

She is being taught the basics in food preparation before she begins work in the new bakery next door to the eatery.

There are parallels with Toni and her new boss Amanda - both inherited a love of baking and cake-decorating from their mothers. Amanda trained as a pastry chef before setting up her own business in 2008, while her young employee gained praise at college for her cake and breadmaking skills.

Being part of the Fancie family - which has a growing local and national reputation - is a huge honour for Toni.

She said: “Looking forward, I will be an assistant chef. Hopefully once the bakery opens I’ll be doing a lot more. I’m so glad I took part in the campaign. I have made so many friends.

“I love it here - especially on Fridays when we get to eat the cupcakes!”

The We Want to Work campaign showcases the CVs of unemployed people in Sheffield taking part in the Government’s Work Programme, delivered by A4E. Visit www.thestar.co.uk/lifestyle/the-star-says/ to view a video of our candidates.
