A SOUTH Yorkshire man was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after a lamppost fell onto the car he was travelling in - trapping him inside, writes Claire Lew.

The 23-year-old, from Scawthorpe, Doncaster, was a passenger in a red Fiat Punto travelling along Doncaster Road, Denaby Main, when the car ran out of control and ploughed into steel fencing and a lamppost.

Police said the lamppost then fell onto the roof of the car - trapping the passenger inside until firefighters arrived to cut him free.

He was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where he was detained.

The driver of the car - a 21-year-old man from Denaby Main - was taken to hospital suffering from shock and slight injuries but was later released and arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Witnesses to the collision at 10.40pm yesterday or anyone who saw the Punto in the moments before the crash should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202020 and quote incident number 1,267 of March 5.
