LIBERAL Democrat city councillor Coun Ali Qadar, who has represented Nether Edge since 1996, has announced he will not stand at the next local elections.

The first Muslim Lib Dem councillor in Yorkshire and Humber and the longest-serving Muslim member of Sheffield City Council, he is stepping down when his current term ends in May next year.

Coun Qadar, a chartered accountant, stood as a parliamentary candidate in Sheffield Central in 1997, 2001 and 2005.

He is a trustee of Sharrow Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Sheffield Mental Health Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Sheffield Racial Equality Council.
